Male Taken into Custody Following High-Risk Incident in Naicatchewenin First Nation

Naicatchewenin First Nation – On the evening of Monday, June 9, Treaty Three Police Service (T3PS) officers responded to multiple reports involving a male armed with an axe within the community of Naicatchewenin First Nation. Earlier in the day, several calls had been received about the individual, and initial efforts to locate and apprehend him were unsuccessful.
At approximately 7:30 p.m., the situation escalated when T3PS received reports that the male was actively threatening individuals with an axe. Multiple T3PS units responded rapidly, including a member of the South Emergency Response Team (ERT). Officers from the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) also attended to assist.
Responding officers encountered a high-risk situation involving an individual actively threatening public safety. Given the nature of the threat, officers took appropriate precautions to ensure the safety of community members and themselves. Through coordinated efforts and effective de-escalation, the situation was brought under control without injury. The individual was safely taken into custody, and no officers were harmed. The Emergency Response Team was subsequently stood down.
A 44-year-old male from Naicatchewenin First Nation has been charged with multiple offences that include:
- CC 145(5)(a) Adult Failure to comply with release order X4
- CC 88 Adult Possession of Weapon for Dangerous Purpose
- CC 129(a) Adult Resist Peace Officer
- CC 267(a) Adult Assault with A Weapon X4
“This was a dangerous and unpredictable situation that could have ended very differently,” said Staff Sergeant James Broughton. “Our officers relied on their training, maintained calm under pressure, and made the safety of community members their top priority.”
